Patients Coming Off Anti-Obesity Medications Regain Weight Four Times Faster Than Those on Conventional Diets
A recent study indicates that patients who stop using new weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover lost weight much more quickly than those who end conventional lifestyle plans.
Published data in a prominent medical journal demonstrates that while obese individuals frequently drop a large proportion of their body weight while on the medication, the weight returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"People buying these treatments should be aware of the potential of quick weight regain when the therapy is stopped," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain means a return to original mass within about one and a half years.
Weighing Treatments
The research, which reviewed 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the outcomes of these new drugs with conventional dieting.
Researchers note that people who shed pounds through dieting typically have a more gradual weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
The Reason for the Quick Rebound
Doctors propose the mechanism of the injections explains the heightened regain.
GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could reduce responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating far more likely."
A Chronic Condition?
The NHS recommend the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
Many experts argue that, given the high risk of relapse, the treatment should be considered ongoing.
This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "highlight the persistent nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.
Patient Accounts
Individuals who have discontinued the medication report a powerful return of appetite.
"It was like something flipping and I was suddenly starving," described an individual.
The struggle is compounded if users have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Widespread Adoption
Survey data show that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with demand being substantial.
- Adoption is greater among women than men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, clinicians caution that while these medications are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and lasting health benefits likely depends on integrated lifestyle management.
